Forager Font – Expressive display font for bold branding with attitude

Forager is not a typeface for quiet brands. It is loud, organic and deliberately experimental. Inspired by psychedelic rock, natural forms and the design aesthetics of the 70s, it combines flowing Art Nouveau elements with the clarity of sans serif typography. The result: an overlapping display font that remains surprisingly legible despite its complex shapes. Developed by Jacob Cummings for Overlap Type, Forager is perfect for branding, editorial design and visual statements with attitude.

Forager: When typography starts to breathe

Forager is one of those typefaces where you realise straight away: nobody set out to design „just another sans serif“ here.
It was all about attitude. About rhythm. About visual friction.

The font unites three very different worlds:

  • the psychedelic opulence of the 70s,

  • the organic lines of Art Nouveau,

  • and the reduction of modern sans-serif typefaces (sans-serif typefaces without small descenders).

That sounds like chaos. But it isn’t.
Forager balances these influences with surprising precision.

Overlapping as a design principle

At the heart of Forager is its overlap. Letters share space, intersect and interlock. Normally, this would be a nightmare for readability. Not here.

The trick lies in the design:
curved verticals meet flat horizontals. This creates a rounded, slightly angular design language that makes overlaps clearly recognisable. The eye can distinguish between the letters, even though they touch. Typographically clever. Almost cheeky.

The font family comprises five weights, each available in:

  • overlapping variants for maximum impact

  • and tightly spaced versions for more controlled layouts

This makes Forager amazingly versatile – from bold branding and editorial headlines to experimental social media visuals.

Who is behind it?

Forager was designed by Jacob Cummings, and published by Overlap Type – a relatively new but all the more exciting typeface label headed by Kel Troughton.

Overlap Type was launched in 2023 with a radical rule: Only typefaces with overlapping letterforms.

What began as a self-imposed restriction quickly became a creative playground. Today, Overlap Type goes beyond mere overlapping, whilst remaining true to its mission: to challenge conventional rules in type design.

And that’s exactly what you sense about Forager.
This typeface isn’t designed to please. It’s designed to make an impact.

Why we love Forager

Forager is the perfect fit for brands that don't want to be slick. For sustainable businesses, cultural projects, vegan labels or magazines with high standards.

She says:
We think differently.
We’re not afraid to take risks.
And we mean business.

Typography is communication. Forager speaks loudly – but not haphazardly.

Additional licence options – such as those for apps or enterprise use – can be found at www.overlaptype.com.

You want to know if Forager fits your brand?

Or are you looking for a typeface that truly supports your brand strategy, your corporate design and your communication?

Then let's talk about it. We don't think of typography in isolation, but as part of a meaningful overall system. For brands with attitude. And backbone.

Owner, branding and marketing expert

I’m Katrin – founder of 2bu design, branding and marketing consultant, design nerd and committed vegan. I help sustainable, ethical and values-driven businesses to raise their profile – without greenwashing, empty buzzwords or generic marketing hype.

My career has taken me to agencies including MetaDesign, frog, GREY, Publicis and milla&partner. There, I had the opportunity to work with international brands and on projects that have won various awards.

When I'm not working on strategies, designs or brand identities, I'm probably lost in interior design inspiration, vegan recipes or far too many open browser tabs at the same time. Creative chaos with a system. Most of the time, at least.
